This page distinguishes tentative dates from confirmed logistics. It will be updated as dates, venue, participation, and support arrangements are finalized.
What is SPARK?
SPARK is a community-led forum and resource hub focused on responsible research translation, practical AI research skills, cross-sector collaboration, and long-term connections within the Schmidt AI in Science community.
Who is the forum for?
The forum is being designed primarily for current and alumni Schmidt AI in Science Fellows across scientific disciplines and levels of AI experience. Final eligibility and participation details will be announced when applications open.
Do I need advanced AI expertise?
No. The four-layer format is designed to welcome participants with different technical backgrounds. Some sessions provide broad conceptual foundations, while others offer hands-on opportunities for participants who want to go deeper.
Is SPARK a conference or a hackathon?
Neither description fully captures it. SPARK combines a retreat, workshop, community gathering, and collaborative prototyping experience. Project work is intended as a supported learning process rather than a high-pressure competition.
What will project teams produce?
Teams will work toward a realistic minimum viable prototype, research artifact, project plan, or other concrete deliverable. The goal is to experience the pathway from stakeholder needs and problem framing to responsible implementation—not to produce a finished product in a few days.
When and where will the forum take place?
Planned dates: March 7–12, 2027 (tentative), in Ann Arbor, Michigan. March 7: participant check-in only. March 8–12: main program. The dates and specific venue await final confirmation. Please wait for confirmation before making travel arrangements.
Are applications open?
Not yet open — stay tuned. Application instructions, eligibility, deadlines, selection criteria, and available participant support will be announced once finalized.
Will travel and accommodation be supported?
Participant support arrangements are still being finalized. Please do not make travel plans until official details are published.
Will forum materials be publicly available?
Selected tutorials, recordings, project materials, and reports may be shared after appropriate permissions, accessibility review, and licensing checks. Some participant or project information may remain private.
How will personal information be handled?
Application, mentorship, travel, dietary, and accessibility information will be collected through approved secure forms. Sensitive personal information will not be stored in the public website repository.
How can I contribute an opportunity or resource?
A reviewed community submission process is under development. In the meantime, the contribute page explains what the hub plans to accept and how to contact the team.
